SUBTROPICS XXIV SUMMER FESTIVAL
produced by SFCA [isaw+subtropics] and presented
in collaboration with ArtCenter/South Florida
opening: JULY 5, 2017
performances, films, panels: JULY 6-22, 2017
exhibitions: JULY 6-SEPTEMBER 3, 2017

For its 24th edition, Subtropics Biennial will become a Summer Festival and will feature live performances by Olivia Block, Abbey Rader, John Driscoll, Jack Wright, Richard Garet, Barbara Held and AMEE members, Miguel Álvarez-Fernández and Victor Aguado Machuca.

Subtropics will also feature a sound art exhibition titled LISTEN by artistic director, Gustavo Matamoros featuring installations from the SFCA [isaw+subtropics]’s archive—originally developed and adapted for the Listening Gallery; an installation by Alba Triana and the classic Subtropics Marathon.

The festival will also offer workshops and seminars about experimental music, free musics and sound art with authors Jennie Gottschalk, Jack Wright and Christoph Cox

Subtropics24 will celebrate the life and work of our dearest friend and collaborator, filmmaker Charles Recher with an evening of his films at Miami Beach Cinematheque.

The Subtropics Festival is a biennial of music and sound art founded by Gustavo Matamoros—who runs The Audiotheque @ ArtCenter in Studio #201. The Audiotheque is an intimate space that hosts concerts, listening events for the general public as well as residencies with artists for the development of new work in music and sound art.

SFCA [isaw+subtropics] is the leading proponent of experimental music and sound art in the Southeast, and the nourishing platform for projects like Audiotheque, the Subtropics Biennial and yearly Marathon, the Frozen Music Ensemble, iSAW’s Experimental Sound Archive and Sound Studio, and many more projects designed to produce, promote and present the newest, most on-topic new music and sound art experiences in South Florida.

This year’s biennial is presented by SFCA [isaw+subtropics] in collaboration with ArtCenter/South Florida. Other partners include,  Asociación de Música Electroacústica y Arte Sonoro de España (AMEE), Miami Beach Cinematheque, Filmmakers Showcase, and Obsolete Media Miami (OMM). Special thanks to Judy Robertson, Marilyn Gottlieb-Roberts and The Estate of Charles Recher.

SUBTROPICS XXIV is possible with funding support from Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and PICA; City of Miami Beach’s Cultural Affairs Program and Cultural Arts Council; with additional support from Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners; and sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; and by the Blank Family Foundation. SFCA [isaw+subtropics] would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Sennheiser, leaders in superior sound technology.
