The XXI Subtropics — Miami’s Experimental Biennial of Music & Sound Arts — will kick start at Artcenter / South Florida’s 924 building on Lincoln Road from 6-10 PM on March 3, 2011 with a retrospective exhibition of posters from the Creative Design Project for Youth (DCPY), and a reprise of Alvin Lucier’s Music for Pure Waves, Bass Drums and Acoustic Pendulums, a sculptural composition from iSAW’s permanent sound art collection.
The Creative Design Project for Youth (CDPY) is an educational program of SFCA’s interdisciplinary Sound Arts Workshop (iSAW) that nurtures the talent of creative Miami-Dade County Public Schools students aspiring to enter top design programs at established universities. The program, directed by sound media artist, educator and designer Rene Barge, seeks to enhance the knowledge and competitiveness of these students by engaging them in real-world experiences that augment their portfolios with published original designs. In over two years and based on the quality of their work during their CDPY mentoring program, our students have been admitted to prestigious design programs such as Ringling College of Art and Design, Cal Arts and The Art Institute of Chicago.
Music for Pure Waves, Bass Drums and Acoustic Pendulums is an iconic sound installation piece in which ping-pong balls bounce magically off of bass drum skins excited by low-frequency waves.
