Biographical note:

Kyle Motl is a bassist, composer, and improvisor active in the South Florida area. A musician of eclectic tastes, Kyle works in a wide variety of styles and settings, from jazz and avant-garde to heavy metal, classical, and contemporary art music.

As a bassist, Kyle is currently a member of master free jazz drummer Abbey Rader’s quartet with saxophonists John McMinn and Noah Brandmark. In his own trio, Kyle is developing a repertoire inspired by various traditional musics and informed by contemporary art music concepts and aesthetics, while remaining in the improvised jazz idiom. Lately, Kyle has been collaborating with a number of up and coming composers on works featuring the double bass, and has been involved in numerous performances of new music in the Miami area. Recent performances include collaboration with legendary saxophonists Kidd Jordan and Larry McKenna, vocalists Jill Burton and Nat Chandler, percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani, and violist Martha Mooke, among others.

Kyle received a BM from Florida Atlantic University, and is currently a MM student at Florida International University, where he studies jazz and improvisation with Gary Campbell and Dr. Jamie Ousley. While at FIU, Kyle also studied electroacoustic and computer music with Dr. Jacob Sudol and currently studies with cellist Jason Calloway.

As a composer, Kyle is particularly interested in exploring cyclical and recursive structures, as well as chaotic systems and fractal mathematics. Other interests integrated in his composition include timbral exploration, spectralism, and the influence of the spiritualism and mysticism of various cultures. Recent compositions have been performed at the 2012 FEASt and 2013 Subtropics festivals.
