SUBTROPICS 22 MARATHON – PART 1

Special Guest: Lou Mallozzi

Peers (2010)
sound performance for 12 readers, 30 minutes

Peers is a performance comprised of everything Lee Harvey Oswald said from the moment of Kennedy’s assassination until the moment of Oswald’s assassination. The text is recited by twelve people in unison, a stand-in for the jury Oswald never had, one of many gaps and absences in an event that has become so mythological that its facts may never surface nor perhaps even matter.

Lou Mallozzi is a sound artist based in Chicago who makes performances, installations, and recorded works. He is on the faculty of the Sound Department of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is executive director of Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago.

Other highlights include performances by …

… composer-performers, Carlos Dominguez, Phillip Hermans and Ryan Maguire visiting from Dartmouth College …

… visual artists Sandra Binion from Chicago will be setting up an installation to run during the length of the marathon …

… composer Lawrence W. Moore will perform, “Establishment”, a piece is based on I Ching hexigrams sonified through synthesis and depicted through video art …

… also included in the program will be a piece by Miami born composer Matthew Hettick for electronics … as well as …

… a work for 5 players called Inner Cycles by composer Rodrigo Bussad, featuring David Dean Mendoza, Liza Seigido, Lawrence W. Moore, Peter Learn, and the composer …

… Nestor Prieto‘s Graupel is an improvisation that takes advantage of the textural characteristics of instruments in my collection of hand-made and circuit-bent electronics.  These units include: The three-oscillator Maxim’s NAND synth, a photo-controlled Atari Punk Console, a circuit-bent Stylophone, a circuit-bent Gakken SX-150 analog synth, the Curious George delay unit (based on the PT2399 echo/delay IC), and the Better Botanicals/Lord Shiva circuit-bent chorus/tremolo unit …

… also in the program, a special appearance by Nicole Martinez and her battery of sound objects … and by David Brieske performing on guitar and synths over field recordings …
