Abbey Radar is an improvising drummer, with roots equally formed within the history of jazz, himself a prominent voice in the idiom since the 1960s, and spirituality, a practitioner of martial arts since 1963 and Buddhism since 1975.
Hearing John Coltrane perform live left him irrevocably touched, a witness to the spiritual power of improvisation. He distances himself from labels such as free jazz, energy music, avant-garde, et al., because for him improvisation is as close to the spirit as possible, a means to purify oneself and bring people to a higher level, thus a practice distanced from such contemporary cultural neologism.
For this event, Rader will bring a drum set and several metal and wooden percussion instruments, and as he says, he will “play things as they come to me”, because “everything is in flux.”
And after a half set of solo playing, Rader has announced a surprise appearance by two special guests, saxophonist John McMinn and doublebassist Kyle Motl.
