ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Jon Paden will give an artist talk introducing and discussing the realms of virtual, mixed and augmented reality, where the field rests and how it will be changing our perceptions of creation. Jon’s talk is informed by and representative of his research-based artistic practice, including how research informs conceptual understanding and relationships to making art alongside the medium of science and engineering.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jon Paden (1982, Springfield, OH) is a sculptor and digital media artist based out of San Diego California, USA. He received a BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, OH and is currently completing his MFA at University of California San Diego. Paden’s artwork crosses artistic boundaries, covering a myriad of materials, techniques, and traditions including wood, glass, drawing, painting and technology driven new media. Programming and algorithms play a crucial role in the autonomy of the artworks. His most recent work “InMemori” mixed paper masks and computer vision to build a one of a kind augmented reality artwork that explored digital memorial and how physical objects can be embedded with digital information as memory.
Paden currently leads the ARtSSt research group, a collaboration between UCSD’s Immersive Visualization Lab, Lipomi Research Group and the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination. ARtsst explores Virtual and Augmented Reality, investigating how this new field can be used to shape somatic experience and understanding. How sight, sound and touch alter our relationship to data and new integrated virtual environments.
