CREATIVE DESIGN PROGRAM FOR YOUTH

The Creative Design Project for Youth (CDPY) is an educational program of the interdisciplinary Sound Arts Workshop (iSAW) that nurtures the talent of creative Miami-Dade County Public Schools students aspiring to enter top interdisciplinary design programs at established universities.

The program, directed by sound media artist, educator and designer Rene Barge, seeks to enhance the knowledge and competitiveness of these students by engaging them in real-world experiences that augment their portfolios with published original designs commissioned by businesses in our community. These students receive 7th period credit for their participation in this school-year-long program.

The theme for this year’s program involves the marketing of the 20th Anniversary edition of Subtropics, iSAW’s biennial of experimental music and sound art. This internationally acclaimed festival features
music performances, radio art, video screenings and panel discussions with prominent visiting and resident artists, plus a five-week long sound art exhibition at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach from February 26 through March 29, 2009

Business sponsors commission an original poster design by one student for display at their store fronts, restaurants or hotel lobbies advertising the their support of the festival and of CDPY. Students gain insight into the commissioning process from start to finish with the guidance of iSAW’s creative staff.

MENTORING PROGRAM: SOUND AND INTERMEDIA PRODUCTION AND DESIGN

This program was established in the Fall of 2005 with an Access to Artistic Excellence grant from the NEA’s Media Arts Program. Its goal is to offer participants access to the artistic process by working directly with professional artist mentors creating new work at our intermedia sound studio. Mentors involve the students in the making of their proposed projects, from the conceptual stage up to the presentation of the work in local galleries and concert spaces. Mentoring arrangements vary with each school. So far the program has banked on existing internship programs at partner schools, namely Design & Architecture Senior High and Miami Springs Senior High. Selected students receive 7th period credit for their participation. Miami Beach Senior High is the latest school to join the program. The school will host events of isaw’s 20th Subtropics Biennial of experimental music and sound art. These students will benefit from working directly with master artists and production professionals, in this case, all at their own school.
