“Miami’s sound chamber”
a place ideal for the creation and sharing of
experimental music and sound art
Described by visitors as “the best sounding, most intimate space for new music in Miami,” Audiotheque was both, an audio production studio for developing new work by resident artists, and an optimized listening environment for lectures, workshops, and intimate performances produced by SFCA [isaw+subtropics] through December 2018.
Managed by SUBTROPICS organization, Audiotheque (1.0) is the brainchild of Gustavo Matamoros. Housed in his resident artist studio (201) at ArtCenter South Florida (a.k.a. Oolite Arts) since 2012, it was a small but acoustically beautiful sound art project created for residencies with guest artists to develop new work, some of it for the public art Listening Gallery Knight Arts Challenge funded project, and for exposing audiences to new listening experiences of the highest quality through concerts, listening events and other public programs
A second Knight Arts Challenge grant in 2017 supported Gustavo Matamoros’ idea to re-design Audiotheque with the help of visual artist and exhibition designer Freddy Jouwayed into a customized laboratory for immersive experiences in sound. His proposal centered around his design of a 30-channel state-of-the-arts sound system that offered audiences access to unique immersive experiences of sound art not available elsewhere. Audiotheque 2.0 opened to the public on September 13, 2018 and ran through December 15th
All the works presented in the context of Audiotheque 2.0 were created collaboratively while in the studio by resident artists and or orchestrated for the sound system following a strategy defined by the tuning of three elements: The Content (the sounds heard); The Timbre (the character of each speaker); and The Space (the acoustics in Audiotheque)
Audiotheque 2.0 [ 09.13.2018 — 12.15.2018 ]
Audiotheque 2.0 was implemented with a Knight Arts Challenge Award from the Knight Foundation. It took the first half of 2018 to design and prepare the space before summer programs we had planned could take place and after which the 30-channel sound system could be installed. It took the rest of the summer to create content designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the system
Audiotheque 2.0 opened to the public on September 13, 2018 and I was able to create and organize a series of sound installations and performances both in collaboration with a group of sound art resident artists and alone as experimental adaptations of my own works and works from the Subtropics Archive of Sound Art. At least one new work was created every week and presented to audiences every weekend through December 15th
The works presented were created and presented in configurations that ranged from Four-point source Pyramid configurations to those orchestrated for the full 30-channels of audio. A comprehensive description of this project including a full report with stats about attendance, audience surveys and reviews can be found at: SUBTROPICS-AUDIOTHEQUE_2.0
