a world premiere

A four part series conceived of and organized by current Deering Estate artist-in-residence Gustavo Matamoros as part of his yearlong residency. The program consists of a series of experimental collaborations with established intermedia artists using new technologies to combine site-specific recordings, local myth, language and archival content from the Subtropics collection.

This project is funded in part by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation through the Knight Arts Challenge. 

This event will take place indoors at the Deering Estate Theater located at the Visitor Center. Admission to this program is free with RSVP on the individual evening program listings on Eventbrite.

INDIVISIBLES – Part 1
in collaboration with David Dunn and Ralph Provisero

This performance follows the format of a limited edition art album published by Subtropics Editions containing recorded works by Gustavo Matamoros and Dunn as well as drawings by Provisero, this event will be presented in a multichannel audio context with animated projections of Provisero’s drawings designed and performed by Freddy Jouwayed and Rodrigo Arcaya.

PIN PAN PUN – Part 2

This playful collaborative play combines a collection of intermedia sound pieces by Gustavo Matamoros and Hernández Sánchez presented as a single unified play. Pin Pan Pun is designed for flexible spaces and situations so that it can go on the road.

With the intent to make a movie portraying the unusual activity residing within (and outside) the walls of the Deering Estate mansions, Paranormal combines the talents of the fabulous Oleszko with that of the Matamoros Brothers into a performative intermedia film-poster designed to introduce some of the off characters they discovered in the process.

This fourth evening-long event provides a framework for the presentation of sound art, radio art and intermedia from the archives of the Subtropics Organization in a creative mixed media context.

The Deering Estate is a 21st Century house museum, cultural and ecological field station, and a national landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, owned by the State of Florida, and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Stone House, and along with our philanthropic partners, the Deering Estate Foundation & 100 Ladies of Deering, we will be hosting a series of events & programs in celebration of this momentous occasion.
