In 1981 Soundings, often hailed as a landmark exhibition, opened at the Neuberger Museum of Art at the State University of New York in Purchase. Curated by Suzanne Delehanty, the exhibition was the first comprehensive survey of sound and music in the visual arts from 1900 to 1980 in the United States. Featuring paintings, sculpture, installations, recordings, film, and performances, Soundings occupied the Neuberger Museum’s first floor, measuring close to 30,000-square feet, as well as in the landscape surrounding the university campus.
