TANGIBLE INSTANCES:
Tracing The Evolution of iSAW’s Creative Design Project for Youth (CDPY)

Opening-reception: June 18, 2011 | 7-10PM
Tangible Instances continues through August 8, 2011

Artcenter/South Florida, 924 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach

FREE

SFCA [isaw + subtropics.org] and Artcenter/South Florida announce the opening of the exhibition Tangible Instances: Tracing the Evolution of iSAW’s Creative Design Project for Youth (CDPY).  The static and moving images in this exhibition are simply instances … residual of the creative process CDPY students engage on during their residencies … to which we then attach a utilitarian purpose suitable for publishing.  The exhibit records the history of iSAW’s CDPY program demonstrating the gradual acquisition of increasingly sophisticated technological language by our students.

The Creative Design Project for Youth (CDPY) is an educational program of the SFCA’s interdisciplinary Sound Arts Workshop (iSAW) that nurtures the talent of creative Miami-Dade County Public Schools students aspiring to enter top art and design programs at established universities.  It focusses on the development of 21st Century read/write skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and communication.  This particular form of engagement results in each student adopting and shaping their own ambitious goals.  The program, directed by sound media artist, Rene Barge — 2010 Nobel Educator of Distinction — seeks to enhance the knowledge and competitiveness of students by engaging them in real-world experiences that augment their portfolios with published original works. Since 2008, our students have been admitted to prestigious art and design programs at Ringling College of Art and Design, Cal Arts and The Art Institute of Chicago, based on the quality of their work for CDPY.

The Career Pathways Consortium — a partnership between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Miami Dade College that is committed to increasing the graduation rate, post-secondary transition, and employability of students — has identify CDPY as a model project, and has established a partnership with SFCA in support of accomplishing its visionary educational goals.

Proceeds from the sale of the images in this exhibition will benefit CDPY.
