FRED LONBERG-HOLM: IN-RESIDENCE

AUDIOTHEQUE [JAN26-MAR07, 2016] a residency in collaboration with ArtCenter/South Florida

Chicago based cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm is no stranger to South Florida. He has been a guest multiple times of the Subtropics Festival since the early 90s. If you enjoyed the recent Audiotheque solo concert by Chris Corsano, you will not want to miss Fred Lonberg-Holm in concert, this time exclusively at Audiotheque!

A former student of Anthony Braxton, Morton Feldman, Bunita Marcus and Pauline Oliveros, his primary projects are his Valentine Trio and The Lightbox Orchestra, Fred Lonberg-Holm has played and studied music in a variety of situations from the Juilliard School to the gutter

He is also a member of a number of ongoing collective projects (The Boxhead Ensemble, The Friction Brothers with Michaels Zerang and Colligan, The Flatlands Collective, Keefe Jackson’s Fast Citizens) as well as participating in numerous one off “ad-hoc” or in frequently convening ensembles

He also currently plays in groups led by Joe McPhee (Survival Unit III), Peter Brotzmann (Chicago 10tet), and Ken Vandermark (Vandermark 5, Frame 4tet, Territory Ensemble)

Improvisors he has worked with include Jim Baker, John Butcher, Wilbert DeJoode, Axel Doerner, Mats Gustafsson, Charlotte Hug, Glenn Kotche, Peter Kowald, Nicole Mitchell, Torsten Muller, Jim O’Rourke, Jeff Parker, David Stakenas, Ben Vida, and Michael Zerang

He has contributed cello sounds to numerous recording projects by rock groups including Califone, Freakwater, God-is-my-co-pilot, L’altra, Smog, Super Chunk, US Maple, Wilco and many others

His two-week-long residency at Audiotheque will feature a Listening Club episode about the presence of the cello within Jazz entitled, From Swing to Noise; a highlight Solo Concert performance; and a Light Box Orchestra concert product of a musician’s workshop organized in partnership with ArtCenter/South Florida.

FRED LONBERG-HOLM: CREATIVE SOLO CELLO
presented at Audiotheque, ArtCenter, Miami Beach
Tickets available at the door

Because of the Subtropics Festival, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm has been no stranger to Miami. Yet his last solo appearance was back in 2005 during Subtropics 17 at the old Dorsch Gallery in the Wynwood Art District.

You should definitely be curious about his music—specially his solo work. Lonberg-Holm’s solo concerts are showcases of his latest discoveries in sound. His music is spontaneous, creative, playful and insightful, and is our opinion that he is got to be the best creative cellist alive in the world today!

TOWARD A LIGHTBOX ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCE—A WORKSHOP
An Improvisation Workshop conducted by Fred Lonberg-Holm takes place at Audiotheque

Musicians! This free workshop is for all interested in developing improvisational skills around the exploration of non gestural conduction constructions. The only requirements are 1) a willingness to listen to others; and 2) an interest in being an ensemble member over being a soloist.

The outcome of this workshop will be presented in a special performance at ArtCenter/South Florida’s Project 924, Friday, February 5. Interested? to sign up please call ArtCenter, 305-674-8278

THE LIGHTBOX ORCHESTRA: LONBERG-HOLM and MUSICIANS
presented at Project 924, ArtCenter, Miami Beach
for advance tickets call: ArtCenter, 305-674-8278

The Lightbox Orchestra is an ongoing non-fixed personnel ensemble project exploring non gestural conduction constructions. Using a system of lights and cards, the Lightbox operator works with the ensemble to fabricate real time open form compositions. A typical version incorporates roughly 10 musicians comfortable with working in the open space (but from any tradition) and one Lightbox operator. The operator chooses who is invited to play forming different small groups or tutti sections as the piece unfolds. In addition, suggestions can be made via “parameter cards”
